First Bell

Tomorrow is the first day of school in Russia for all students. It's called "First Bell". I enjoyed watching all the students make their way to school on this day. Boys and girls dressed in their very best carrying flowers for their teacher.........the girls often wearing huge white bows on their hair! We attended a First Bell when we lived in Novosibirsk in 2004. Our fellow teammate's daughter and son were attending their first day of school and we got to go along. Lots of singing, dancing, and excitement filled the air. Everyone comes to their child's First Bell, including grandmas, grandpas, aunts, younger cousins, etc. Little did we know that clear across on the eastern side of Russia in a city called Beslan a total massacre was going on. Chechnyan rebels had launched one of Russia's worse terrorist attacks. It was heartbreaking watching the news footage that evening.
